The LIFT Foundation, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, was established in May 1966 in response to a community need for affordable housing. At the time, private citizens representing the business, corporate, community, and nonprofit sectors collaborated to form LIFT. Their goal was to create an entity that could receive federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create and manage affordable, safe, and stable housing for people with low incomes in the Kalamazoo area.
From 1966 to the present, LIFT has taken the lead in establishing partnerships with public and private organizations and agencies to meet the changing housing needs of the low-income families and individuals in the greater Kalamazoo area. Throughout its four decades of operations, the LIFT Foundation has made community stability a high priority. LIFT maintains a replacement reserve to make certain that funds for maintenance and upkeep of its properties will always be available. Neighbors can be assured that LIFT properties will be cared for in a professional manner. And because LIFT is a nonprofit, it will not sell its buildings to a new owner or convert to another type of housing.
